I might be interested in doing what you do. So how do I do it?

If you need to (or just want to) make more money, either BIG MONEY or small money, you should seriously consider an AVON business. In order to seriously consider an AVON business, you need to know the details about how the business works. Personally, I like to know the bottom line before I get involved in something, therefore, I like to share the basics with anyone interested in an AVON business before expecting them to sign on with my Cloud Climbers unit. This is what I tell my potential recruits:

The beauty of starting an AVON business is that you invest so little, only $15, and there is no long term commitment required. If you should try the business and decide you don't like it or it does not fit your life, you just pay what you owe for the products you have ordered and you are done.

For your $15 investment, you will receive resource materials to get you started as well as 10 books for each of your first two campaigns. We turn in orders every two weeks (called a campaign) on the internet and orders are delivered to our doorsteps within a few days. AVON will determine from the information submitted on your contract what your credit limit is. It is your own business, so people pay you with cash, checks (made out to you), or by credit/debit card, and you pay AVON the amount due them. You can sell to anyone you want.

Earnings levels with AVON range from 20% to 50%, depending on the amount of your order. Your discount on the products you purchase for yourself is equal to your earnings level on the order. You must turn in an order of at least $50 in order to receive any earnings or discount. If you order products when they first come out on demo, you get an additional 5% off.


When you place your first order with Avon, you order brochures for your third campaign. The brochures are sold in packs of 10, and one pack is $6.29. The more brochures you buy, the less they cost per brochure, with 20 books costing $8.69, 30 costing $11.09, etc. This is to encourage you to build your business by getting new customers. You charge each customer a service charge of .75 on their order, and you keep all of that to help cover your expenses. You will need to purchase bags for sorting the customer orders, and you can get 50 of those for about $1.25. AVON charges One Simple Fee to cover the cost of the shipping of your products to you and your personal website, and it is very reasonable and based on the size of your order - starting at $5.95. Other than the occasional product return, those are your basic expenses. Of course, you can invest more in the business by purchasing samples, demo products, etc., but that is up to you. There are many free interactive training courses at the AVON website to help you build a successful business. These courses are excellent, and well worth your time if you want to build a successful business.

AVON will also furnish you a personal website at no additional cost where your customers can shop if they choose or if they live outside of your delivery area. With your website you can sell to anyone within the continental United States, with those not in your delivery area choosing direct delivery from AVON. You will receive at least 20% profit on those direct delivery orders. AVON creates many social media posts that you can use in promoting your website.

AVON Selling Cycle

Are you aware that AVON sells in two week cycles? Each representative has a date on which they are to turn in the current campaign order, so that things flow smoothly with our processing facility and customers get their orders on a regular schedule. On the date we turn in an order for a given campaign, we can also go back to the two previous brochures and order from them as well, thereby giving every customer the best buy that is available. There are 26 campaigns to a year, and right now we are selling in Campaign 3. TIP: If you are ordering at my personal website, you will only see brochures for the current campaign, but if you choose to shop by product number (click on "Shop Now" and then on the heading at the top right that says "Shop Product #"), you can choose to have your items ordered at the prices in the two previous brochures.

  • Page 161, You won't find Perfumed Liquid Deodorant in the brochure every time, but we still have it. I guess this product has been around longer than any I know of, except perhaps Skin So Soft Bath Oil. Right now it is LPE of $2.49.
  • Page 163, And speaking of SSS Bath Oil, the 24 fl. oz. size - the biggest we sell - is also LPE right now at only $9.99.

So...What's Your Favorite AVON Product?

Today while I was having a routine dental cleaning, my hygienist asked me what my favorite AVON product was. At first I couldn't think of an answer...then I started to name something...then I thought, "Well, I can't actually say that is my FAVORITE," because I honestly use AVON products for pretty much all my needs that AVON products will cover, and having used them for almost 30 years now, I don't have a favorite.  By that I mean that I like all the products I use. If I ever order an AVON product that does not work out for me, I can return it just like I ask my customers to do. (See my previous blog "I'm Not Happy!!" for more on that.) 

Of course, I have customers who have favorite products that they order, and I know some of the products that AVON sells more of than any others - products that have been around for many years, some of them since I started selling. One of those favorites is in the Moisture Therapy lineup, Moisture Therapy Intensive Healing & Repair Hand Cream. This fragrance free product is the most heavy duty of any of our hand creams, and is loved by women and men alike. I sell it in quantity to some, (5 to 10 at a time), and I have a couple of customers who rarely purchase any other AVON products, but never want to run out of this hand cream. 

AVON has just reworked the look of the Moisture Therapy line and added a few products suitable for eczema-prone skin that are hypoallergenic and fragrance-free, which they are calling Moisture Therapy Derma. I'm Not Happy!!

Ah...happiness...it's what everyone is searching for, right? :)  Well, this post is not about how to obtain true happiness, although you just might find a clue to that buried within here somewhere. This post is about what to do when you are not happy with your AVON purchase. After all...




Seriously, if you ever purchase an AVON product that you are not completely satisfied with for any reason, whether you have used the product or not, you can return the product to AVON in one of two ways. If you ordered the product for a representative to deliver to you personally, contact the representative and she will handle the return or exchange. If you ordered the product at a representative's personal website for AVON to deliver directly to you, follow the instructions on the invoice you received with your order. Either way, this is the AVON guarantee which you will see on the back of every AVON brochure:


Of course, you will have to return the product to AVON or to your AVON representative, so don't just throw it away if you don't like it or there is a problem with it. And you will want to take care of the return or exchange as soon as you determine you are not happy with the product, so that the issue can be handled in a timely manner. And don't worry about "taking money out of the pocket" of your representative. AVON gives the representative credit for the cost of the product.

Occasionally I have heard stories of AVON representatives who weren't the best at handling returns for their customers. If you should ever have an issue with your personal AVON representative that you are unable to resolve, (and I hope that you don't), you can most likely find another representative in your area who will be glad to work with you to see that you are happy with your AVON purchases. Most representatives are quite happy to handle returns, because we know that if the customer is satisfied with our service we will keep their business! AND, we want people to be happy, since one of the keys to happiness is to do what we can to make others happy. (See? I said you might find a clue to true happiness buried in this post.)

So, what does AVON sell anyway?

Every campaign (two week AVON selling period) I send an email reminder to my customers in which I list some of the best buys for the campaign. Of course, I can't list everything that is on sale, because there are just too many products! We introduce new products every campaign, and many people who have not seen a brochure in awhile do not realize just how much we have to offer. We often hear comments like: "I didn't know AVON sold ___!" Here is a quick rundown of the type of products we have, beginning with what is shown on the front cover of the current brochure:
  • Curves exercise gear, including shoes.
  • Speaking of shoes, we carry a lot of them, from heels to slippers.
  • Purses and totebags, including the Crazy for Quilted set we have right now.

  • Hair care, from Shampoo to Hair Brushes.
  • Foot care, with our fantastic Foot Works product line.

My Story

Almost 30 years ago, I quit my secretarial job to become a stay at home mom when my daughter was about to be born. Just a few months later, I was asked by my new AVON lady if I would like to become an AVON representative. I decided it would be a good way to meet people in my neighborhood and spread my influence for good beyond my family and my church family, as well as help with family expenses. I began my business, and have never missed turning in an AVON order on time from that day to this! 

In the beginning, I took little Bonny out in her stroller and we walked the streets handing out about 30 brochures. AVON representatives were assigned territories in those days before the World Wide Web, so I knew right where I was supposed to go to look for customers. Things have changed a LOT since then, but I still look for my customers in much the same way.... I order extra brochures and leave them at the homes of strangers. Many of those strangers have become loyal customers and friends over the years. I have some customers who have been with me from the beginning of my business.

After I had been with AVON for several years, the Leadership program began. AVON Leadership is available to all representatives, and simply means that in addition to selling the products you also share the opportunity. I quickly built a small unit of representatives and decided to call them the Cloud Climbers, so there you have the explanation for the title of my blog. I've always loved cloud watching and being able to observe the skies as I go about my rounds is one of the perks of my business. As Cloud Climbers, sometimes we are climbing up those beautiful puffy white billows of beauty and sometimes we must struggle through the storm clouds, but we just keep on climbing! Right now I have about 44 Cloud Climbers on my team.

Blogging about my business is totally new to me. In fact, blogging about anything is new to me. I have a small blog included with my AVON website (www.youravon.com/smoore) where I usually list some of the best buys of the current campaign, but that is the only blogging I have done so far. So I'm learning as I go, and looking forward to the journey!
